This highly protective shell obstructs oxygen from reaching the aluminum core, limiting aluminum’s potential to produce power. Dr Michelle Pantoya from Texas Tech University has led a research team to explore alternative shell compositions. New shell chemistry has exciting implications for aluminum use in rocket fuels and other propellants.
